The name Hirai Taro may not ring too many bells even in Japan,
however, under his pseudonym Edogawa Rampo,
he is revered as one of the originators of modern Japanese mysteries.
His name is an homage to that other doyen of  mysterious,
Edgar Allan Poe.  Like Poe, his stories tread into the deepest darkest parts of humanity,
